1988 - USSR launches the Phobos 2 spacecraft. It arrives at Mars on 29 January 1989, measures the Martian atmosphere and photographs both Mars and its satellite Phobos. Contact with the craft was lost on 27 March 1989, preventing the planned deployment of a Phobos lander the following month
