1979 - Voyager 2 makes its closest approach to Jupiter. The spacecraft passes within 570,000 km (350,000 miles) of Jupiter's cloud tops and then heads for Saturn. High resolution photos of Jupiter's moon Europa lead to the belief that the moon is completely covered with a deep water ocean capped with a surface ice layer less than 30 km (18 miles) thick
